DARTMOUTH MAJOR MIDGET HOCKEY HISTORY AND TRADITION

As a proud founding member of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League (1978), our organization has achieved great success both on the ice and away from the arena. In a league that is committed to the development of hockey players, our team is second to none. We are very proud of our history of helping individuals better themselves as hockey players and, most importantly, as people. Our players are prepared to meet everyday challenges, set goals and overcome obstacles. This, in turn, leads to successful experiences in hockey, family, education, the community, and in day-to-day life.

Over the past twenty-five years, our team has played primarily out of the Gray Arena, Bowles Arena and Dartmouth Sportsplex performing under the names of the Dartmouth Forbes Chevy’s, Midget Mounties, Thrifty Car Rental Kings and since 1993, the Dartmouth Subways. Each of these teams have received outstanding guidance from Bill Shannon, Mike Clarke, Wallace Deveau, Gerry Gunter, Don Bauld, Steve Crowell, Robert O’Brien, and Brad Crossley along with many others working tirelessly behind the scenes.

The Dartmouth Subways are considered as the most successful Major Midget team in Atlantic Canada. The team holds the record for the most league pennants (11) and the most league championships (11). The team holds or shares ten of the league's eighteen official team records. Players hold or share eight of the fourteen official individual records. With seven trips to the National Championship, the team has triumphed with a silver (2002) and a bronze medal (1992), adding to a long and rich history of success. Most recently, the Dartmouth Subways finished second at the Atlantic Championship which marked our forth consecutive year representing Nova Scotia at the prestigious event.

We are very proud of our reputation in the region and across the country. We are well known nationally for being a first class, highly competitive organization. We have been extremely stable and consistent. Our President and Executive have largely remained intact over the past twelve years. Teams and players have forged an extraordinary overall record of 706 wins, 269 losses and 77 ties over the last 15 years since 1988. As of 1992, Dartmouth players have been awarded 24 First Team All-star positions, 15 Second Team selections, 4 MVP's, 7 Top Goaltenders Awards, 4 Top Defenseman, 4 Top Rookie Defenseman, 6 Rookie of the Year Awards, 4 Gentlemanly Player Awards, 3 Top Scorers and 6 Academic-Athletic Scholarships.

There has been a great number of talented players graduate from our program and we are proud of each and every one of them. All have, in some way, contributed to our club's growth and prosperity. Many players have graduated to Major Junior, Junior A and eventually University Hockey. Cam Russell, Chad Penney, Jake Grimes, Olaf Kolzig, Trent Cavicchi and Craig Hillier have been fortunate and talented enough to play in the NHL. Most players have eventually found success and enjoyment in other facets of life outside of the game and are recognized as outstanding community members.

The Subway hockey success is fundamentally due to an unfailing commitment to attracting character young men, quality families, good athletes with high expectations and aspirations. Through strong values, hard work, a relentless pursuit of excellence, and sound guidance our program has experienced tremendous success. We have all worked hard in developing a complete and thorough program that is proven to work year after year and we are continually looking to improve it each day. Our ultimate objective is to offer the best Major Midget program possible to our players and families that is positive, challenging, and successful.

We sincerely appreciate, thank, and continually support those that have helped to enrich our program as a player, parent, coach, manager, trainer, executive member, volunteer, family member, sponsor and community supporter.
