ALEX BEATON JOINS LEWISTON IN THEIR PLAYOFF RUN
April 24, 2007

Sixteen year-old Subway Centerman Alex Beaton, the League Top Scorer and Atlantic Championship MVP, has been called up to the Lewiston Mainiacs for the remainder of the season and will join the team in Rouyn Noranda today for game 3 of the QMJHL Semi-Finals. Although there is no guarantee on playing time for Alex, it will be a great experience for him as the Mainiacs take a run at the Presidents Cup and a spot in the Memorial Cup as well. We wish Alex the very best and will follow his progress with enthusiasm.

"Alex is very deserving of this opportunity to join Clement Jodoin and the Lewiston Mainiacs. It is obvious that they think a lot of him to give him the chance. He was a key to our success this season and he will be a key to the Mainiacs future as well. Alex and his family are very excited and we couldn't be more happy for him too."

SUBWAYS SEASON COMES TO A HALT!
April 8, 2007

Unfortunately, after an outstanding performance, the Dartmouth Subways season has ended after losing the Atlantic Regional Final to St. John's by a score of 3-2. The Subways carried the play offensively and territorially for most of the game yet were unable to capitalize on various point blank scoring opportunities at different points in the contest.

The first period was a strong beginning for the Subways as they scored first and outshot the Leafs 18-9. St. John's scored later in the first and again in the second to take a lead into the third. They again scored on the PP five minutes into the final period before Tyler Noseworthy got the Subs within one with nine minutes remaining. The Subways pressed hard the rest of the game but were not able to tie it up.

This was a tough loss to swallow for the team based on their performance, effort level, and the importance of the game. St. John's however is going to be an excellent representative for the Atlantic Region at the Telus Cup National Championship. It is especially difficult knowing that the team is losing many excellent young men due to age or graduating to higher levels of hockey.

Our team would like to honor and congratulate the following players for their contributions to the Subway program and whom are graduating or capable of playing at a higher level of hockey:

Geoff Hum: graduates to Junior Hockey and hopes to move on to US College
Alex Beaton: expected to be a key to the Lewiston Maniacs future
Chris Ivanko: graduates to Junior Hockey
Taylor MacGillivary: will attend US Prep School
Ryan Mitchell: will move on to Junior Hockey
Nick Rose: graduates to Junior Hockey
Scott McDonald: will move on to Junior Hockey or Prep School
Christian Morin: expected to play for Val D'Or Foreurs
Shane Robar: will move on to Junior Hockey
Matt Sollows: moving to Ontario and will play Junior or Prep School
Steven Anthony: will be selected early first round in the QMJHL Draft

Thank you to all of our players and parents. We are proud of every one of you and thank you for helping make our program better. Once a Subway, Always a Subway!

SUBWAYS TIE LEAFS AND UNDEFEATED
April 6, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways tied the St. John's Maple Leafs 2-2 on Friday to remain unbeaten at the Atlantics. Even though the record is decent, the team is now in a must win situation against both Charlottetown at 10:00am and Fredericton at 4:30pm. Should the Subways get the two wins they will get a berth in the Regional Final on Sunday.

The Subways opened the scoring in the first period an a Chris Ivanko snapper from the slot. The Leafs scored two goals in the second period to go ahead. Ryan Mitchell scored the only goal of the third in the final minutes to gain the tie.

Stale Chips and Flat Pop!
April 5, 2007

If you've ever had it you will know what I mean! Stale Chips and Flat Pop aren't very appealing and that is what today's Subway Hockey performance was like. The positive is that the team was able to get a win in a game that should have been won easily had we been as sharp as we have been over the last two months.

The Subways led by a score of 4-1 at one point in the first yet allowed the Cornwall Thunder an opportunity to creep back into the contest with an inconsistent effort and rusty team play. "We had an off day and it showed in the our play and in the score. It was much closer than we cared for. Looking at it afterward, we are glad to be shocked back into existence after a nine day layoff since our last meaningful game. We will need to be at the top of our game from here on in starting Friday against St. John's Nfld," said Coach Crossley.

The Subways will take part in the opening ceremonies on Thursday night, watch a little of the night game, then return to the Motel for a good rest in preparation for Friday's match.

Atlantics Report: Travel Day for Subways
April 4, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways hit the road after school on Wednesday for the 3.5 hour drive to Cornwall PEI and the Atlantic Regional Midget Hockey Championships. Upon arrival in Cornwall at the APM Center, the players had a team meeting with the Atlantic Center of Excellence Staff and Tournament Officials. The staff and players prepared the room with the usual 'Subway Flair' as has become expected in the playoff drive. The players then took some time to prepare their gear and arrange their stalls. A brief team meeting took place before leaving the complex.

After the arena formalities, the group checked into the tournament motel at the Howard Johnsons and prepared for a few laughs and a restful night. The coaching staff will be up early and at the rink for a pre-scout of the morning game and two of our competitors. The players will arrive shortly after, about two hours before game time, to prepare for the opening match against the host team Cornwall Thunder at 1230pm.

SUBWAYS CHANGE FOCUS TO ATLANTICS
April 1, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways are off to the Atlantic Regional Midget Hockey Championships on Wednesday to compete for the title and right to go to the Telus Cup National Championships later in April. Standing in the way are four other very good hockey teams from Fredericton, St.John's, Charlottetown, and the host Cornwall. Other than Cornwall, the other three teams and the Subways were all in last years Atlantics in Dartmouth so the teams are very familiar with one another.

The Subways are in the Atlantics for the seventh time in nine years and hope to avenge a loss to St.John's in last years final. Charlottetown is the only team of the four that the Subways have played this season. The Abbies defeated the Subways in the Monctonian and the Subways returned the favour at the Gatineau Kiwanis event. Dartmouth opens up against the Host team on Thursday at 1230pm.

For full event coverage: www.hockeyscene.com will have Live Radio Coverage during the games and the tournament website is www.atlanticmidgetmajor.ca.

Recent News and Notes:
Congratulations to Andrew Joudrey (Subway '01) for graduating from the University of Wisconsin and signing with the Washington Capitals this past week. Andrew will join the Hershey Bears in the AHL for the remainder of the season and will tryout with the 'big' club next September.

Best wishes to all the former Subway players still playing in the playoffs in the NHL, AHL, Minor Pro, QMJHL, and Junior leagues. It is great to see that you are playing into late March and now April - it is still something we enjoy too!

Outside of the total team effort for the Subways, congratulations to Geoff Hum for winning the Playoff Scoring title. Steven Anthony, who didn't play the final three games of the final series, and Alex Beaton finished close behind in second and third spots. Chris Ivanko, Gerrad Grant, and Scott McDonald were right in the mix in the top ten. Well done to all. Goaltender Nick Rose had an outstanding save percentage and average in the post season and helped lead the team to victory as well.

SUBS SWEEP CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES!!
March 27, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways defeated the Pictou County Weeks by a score of 6-1 on Tuesday night to sweep the NSMMHL Championship series in four games.

MEAT AND POTATOES THE SUB - WAY!
March 26, 2007

Forget the pretty stuff, the Dartmouth Subways had the workboots on and meant business in game three Sunday against the Weeks Major Midgets. After a tough win on Saturday night in New Glasgow, the Subways returned home with focus and determination on Sunday and forged a solid 5-1 win in front of a supportive crowd at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. The team has woked on playing simple and hard hockey against a strong Pictou County squad and have asked all the players to elevate their game and have their performance count!

With a 3-0 series lead nothing can be taken for granted and the Subways know that. The team believes in the system and is focused in one direction. No one is looking beyond game four of the NSMMHL Final. Tuesday's game is just another in a sequence of battles and the players are not looking past their own jobs in preparing to compete shift in and shift out.

Go to www.nsmmhl.com for full box scores.

Game # 4 is Tuesday Night at 6:30pm at the Dartmouth Sportsplex! Be there!!

DARTMOUTH DIGS DEEP!
Sunday March 25, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways leave John Brother Stadium after the first two games of the NSMMHL Finals with a couple wins and a 2-0 lead in the series after winning Saturday 3-1 over the Pictou County Weeks. Ryan Mitchell, Chris Ivanko, and Geoff Hum scored for the Subways and Nick Rose made the difference in nets.

The Subways played very stingy on defense and worked to limit the inside chances for the Weeks. The Penalty Kill units also played strong in nullifying the Weeks Power Play on their six opportunities. The Subway PP went one for two with the man advantage in the game. Pictou County certainly had some opportunities and played hard to close the gap.

You can expect another hard fought game today (Sunday) when the two teams go head to head in game three at the Dartmouth Sportsplex at 1:00pm.

SUBWAYS CAPTURE GAME ONE AGAINST WEEKS!
March 24, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways got a big first win in Game One of the NSMMHL Championship series against the Pictou County Weeks in New Glasgow Thursday night. Geoff Hum was hot as he scored three goals including the winner and insurance marker in the third period. Nick Rose was strong in goal and earned a well deserved victory.

The game was an end to end affair with both teams having equal opportunity with the man-advantage. Subway defenseman Christian Morin threw some thunderous body checks and will look to carry a physical presence into game two.

Game Two will be in New Glasgow on Saturday night at 7pm with Game Three back at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Sunday at 1pm.

Go to www.nsmmhl.com for further details.

SUBWAYS - WEEKS READY TO GO AT IT IN NSMMHL FINAL!!
March 19, 2007

The defending NSMMHL Champion Dartmouth Subways will travel to New Glasgow to take on the Pictou County Weeks in the best of seven later this week. This should be an outstanding series given the talent on each roster and the rivalry that has grown over the years between the two organizations.

The last time these two teams met in the league final it went the distance and into overtime before a player by the name of Sidney Crosby set up Andrew Gordon for the winner in front of 3200 boisterous fans. The Subways also played and eliminated the Weeks in the League semi-finals two seasons ago before losing in game seven in the league final to Cole Harbour.

This will mark the ninth consecutive season that the Dartmouth Subways have played in the NSMMHL Final. During that time, the Subways have won six of the last eight titles to move on to the Atlantic Championships as the Provincial representative.

Coach Crossley commented: "We certainly have some good history and tradition behind us but we have a tough team in front of us and we are not looking past the first game against the Weeks! We know that they are good and we are not taking anything lightly. It should be an excellent and exciting series that will cause a buzz in both communities. Our guys are excited to get it going!"

The NSMMHL Championship Schedule is as follows:

March 22, Thursday - Game # 1 New Glasgow 7:00 PM
March 24, Saturday - Game # 2 New Glasgow 7:00 PM
March 25, Sunday - Game # 3 Dartmouth 1:00 PM
March 27, Tuesday - Game # 4 Dartmouth 6:30 PM
March 29, Thursday - Game # 5 New Glasgow 7:00 PM
March 31, Saturday - Game # 6 Dartmouth 7:30 PM
April 1, Sunday - Game # 7 New Glasgow 1:00 PM

SUBWAYS MOVE ON!
March 16, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways move on to the NSMMHL Championship Series for the 9th consecutive season after a 7-2 win over the hard working and well coached Cape Breton West Islanders. The Subways defeated the Islanders on Thursday evening at the Dartmouth Sportsplex and will now await the winner of the Cole Harbour Pictou County series. Pictou is leading that series 3 games to 2 with game six at the St Margarets Bay Arena on Saturday evening.

Stay tuned for information on the next round opponent and schedule in the coming days.

SUBS SAIL OFF ISLAND WITH 3-1 SERIES LEAD
March 13, 2007

Behind Steven Anthony's five point night and Nick Rose's key saves, the Dartmouth Subways defeated Cape Breton West in game four on Monday night by a score of 8-5 to take a three games to one series lead in the semis.

Last evenings game in Port Hood was penalty filled. Cape Breton West had six long 5 on 3 opportunities in the game and scored on three of them with another coming in a 5 on 4 situation. Dartmouth had one 5 on 3 chance but scored three goals with the one man advantage and the rest even strength.

Coach Crossley noted: "I don't recall ever having so many 5 on 3's against us in a game before but we battled through it and didn't panic even though the West has a strong PP. Speed, intensity, and execution are our strengths and if we play disciplined within our systems and stay out of the box we are tough to beat."

The Islanders travel to the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Thursday night for a 6pm start in Game #5. You can expect the Subways to increase the tempo and battle level. The West will certainly respond as they have never been a team to back down!

This game will not be one you will want to miss! See you Thursday!

TEAM CAPTURES SOLID 4-0 WIN IN PORT HOOD
March 11, 2007

In what might likely be the Subways best all-round team effort of the season, Dartmouth earned a solid 4-0 win in Port Hood against the CB West Islanders on Sunday night. Alex Beaton started the momentum on his first shift and scored in the opening 30 seconds. He finished the night with two goals while Chris Ivanko got the other two. Nick Rose played strong in goal and got a well deserved shut-out stopping all 38 shots.

Special Teams were a key in the win as the Subways scored two goals with the man advantage and killed off numerous CB West power-plays as well. Period scores were 1-0, 3-0, with the Subways capping it off with a goal in the final minutes of the third in front of about 500 spectators.

"I couldn't be more pleased with all our guys tonight. We are beginning to show signs of a team ready and willing to step up and make a difference. However, tomorrow will be yet another test and we don't expect anything to come easy. Cape Breton West is here in the semis for a reason and we won't take them lightly!"

Game 4 is on Monday night at 7pm in Port Hood with Game 5 returning to the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Thursday at 6pm.

SUBWAYS SURFACE AND ELEVATE PLAY TO WALK AWAY WITH 9-4 WIN
March 9, 2007

In a spirited game full of exciting plays and hard hits, the Dartmouth Subways prevailed by a score of 9-4 against the Cape Breton West Islanders in Game #2. The Islanders scored the only goal of the first period before the Subways rattled off six unanswered goals in the second to open up the game in their favor. The score at the end of the second period was 7-3.

The Subways special teams were a little sharper in Thursday's game and the players put together a stronger effort on a more consistent basis on the night. Geoff Hum (3 goal, 1 assist) and Steven Anthony (4 assists) finished the game with four points each while Nick Rose captured the win between the pipes.

The series is knotted at a game each and now moves to Port Hood for games three and four on Sunday and Monday evening. Game #5 is back at the Sportsplex next Thursday at 6pm.

Stay tuned for reports from the Island Sunday night!

ISLANDERS GRAB FIRST GAME 6-4 OVER SUBS
March 8, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways fought from behind for the full 60 minutes but were unable to snatch the win from the Cape Breton West Islanders in game one of the best of seven NS Major Midget Semi-Final series.

The Cape Breton West power play scored 3 important goals on 13 man-advantage opportunities including three five on threes for extended periods of time. The Subways scored one power play goal in their 4 power play chances and found the back of the net with a short-handed marker.

Coach Crossley commented: "Our slow start as a team and amount of times we were penalized was a factor in the game and the West took advantage of that. We have to take control of our own play on Thursday and be accountable for our effort, discipline, and performance. We've battled through adversity all year and this is no different!"

Game #2 is Thursday at 6pm at the Sportsplex.

SUBWAY CAPTURE OPENING SERIES WITH OT WIN
February 18, 2007

Dispite the stellar play of Cape Breton Tradesmen goaltender Melvin Day, the Dartmouth Subways squeezed out a 7-6 OT win in game three in Glace Bay on Saturday night. Day faced 67 shots and made numerous stunning saves to keep the game close and give the Tradesmen a chance.

After falling behind 2-0 early, the Subways battled back with four unanswered goals to take a short-lived 4-2 lead. The Tradesmen responded in the second frame with three quick ones within a two minute span to take the lead before the Subs scored another two to end the period and gain the lead back. The Tradesmen scored the only goal in the third to put the game into OT. Geoff Hum got the winner four minutes into overtime on a goal-mouth scramble to put the Subways into the NSMMHL semi-finals.

Goal scorers for Dartmouth were Geoff Hum (2), Matt Sollows, Chris Ivanko, Tyler Noseworthy, Collin Gates, and Gerrad Grant. Nick Rose got the win in goal for the Subways.

Coach Crossley noted: "The most pleasing parts of the three game series were the contributions we got from all of our players and the timing of goals that we received from our so-called defensive lines. The players are starting to buy into our playoff strategy and the mental and physical effort required for success. As we progress and prepare for the next round we will have to find an even better level of intensity and execution against CB West."

The NSMMHL is now on a 14 day break before the start of the semi-finals while the Canada Games are in progress and many of the league's players compete for the province in Whitehorse. The next round is due to start on March 7 so stay tuned for the upcoming schedule.

SUBS HEAD TO GLACE BAY UP BY TWO AND FOCUSED!
February 12, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways travel to Cape Breton for Game #3 next weekend with a little cushion but are taking nothing lightly! Behind 10-1 and 5-2 home ice wins, the Subways have confidence yet expect another hard fought battle from the Cape Breton Tradesmen next weekend in the NSMMHL Quarter-Finals.

Recap:
Saturday - The Subways scored early and continued to score often to break the game open. Each line contributed on the scoresheet and played a key role in the opening game. The Subways were sharp in all areas and earned the win by a score of 10-1 with a solid and focused team effort.

Sunday - This game started out poorly for the Subs as they were penalized for Delay of Game for arriving onto the ice late for the opening face-off. The squad then continued to be penalized and were short-handed for 14 minutes of the first period including two five on threes. The score at the end of the first was 1-1 and at the end of the second 3-2 for the Subs. Cape Breton showed a stronger effort than in the opening contest and showed that they will not 'tap out'. The Subways worked through the adversity of the first period and found a way to win as the game progressed. This was a very chippy game that left both squads fired up going into game three.

This week the boys will practice three times including a very hard skate on Monday. They will also work on a few things through Video, and make some minor adjustments before the next game on February 18 in Glace Bay.

For full weekend results go to www.nsmmhl.com.

The Subways also won on Saturday by a score of 8-6 over the Cape Breton West Islanders. The Tradesmen finish tied in points with the Halifax McDonalds for 6th spot but fall into 7th by virtue of the head-to-head results between the two clubs.

The Subways will host the Tradesmen on Saturday at 730pm and Sunday at 1pm in games one and two of the opening round of the playoffs. Games will be held at the Dartmouth Sportsplex.

WIN ONE, LOSE ONE, AND TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES TO GO!
January 28, 2007

The Subways visited the Halifax Forum on Saturday night and spotted the Macs two goals after four straight penalities less than 10 minutes into the game. After regaining their composure the squad scored a few special teams goals of their own on the way to a 6-3 win. Alex Beaton and Chris Ivanko led the way with four point nights.

Sunday was yet another test of a different kind. The Pictou County Weeks visited the Sportsplex in Dartmouth to play a tie breaker after the two teams were even at 2 wins apiece on the season. The Subways scored twice in the first period and looked sharp. Weeks increased the tempo in the second period, rattled off four straight goals, and set the pace. The third frame was much better for the home squad yet the Subway Snippers failed to find the back of the net even with a 10-2 shot advantage. The final score was 4-2 in favor of the Weeks.

The Subways will play their final two Home Games at the East Hants Sportsplex next Saturday at 7:30pm against CB West and Sunday at 12:30pm against Cape Breton Tradesmen. SUBS RIDE PP FOR WIN
January 21, 2007

The Dartmouth Subways got two goals from Chris Ivanko and one from both Scott McDonald and Geoff Hum to pull away with a win from a tenacious Valley Wildcat team in Kentville on Saturday night. Scott McDonald and Steven Anthony had three point nights, Geoff Hum got the winner in the third, and Andrew Sidey got a solid win in goal. All Dartmouth goals came with a man advantage.

Goaltender Nick Rose missed the game due to illness as did Andrew Roski and Gerrad Grant (minor injury).

With only four regular season games remaining for the Subways, the team sits in second place just behind Pictou County Weeks. The Subways next home game is against the Weeks on Sunday at the Sportsplex at 1pm. This should make for a very entertaining contest. Don't miss it!

Sun Jan 28: Weeks @ Subways 1pm Dartmouth Sportsplex
Sat Feb 3: CB West @ Subways 730pm East Hants

SUBS CAPTAIN HELPS SQUAD SINK MCCAIN
January 18, 2007

Team Captain Geoff Hum amassed six points in the Dartmouth Subways 7-1 win over Cole Harbour McCain last evening at Cole Harbour Place. The Subways displayed spirit and intensity in scoring two short-handed goals, four even strength markers, and going one for three with the man advantage. Cole Harbour had 10 power plays and scored once late in the second period. The Subs had a solid performance on the Penalty Kill and received stingy goaltending from Andrew Sidey for the win.

The Subways have not lost in League play since December 9th and are on an eight game undefeated streak. But some tough competition looms ahead!

The Subways will practice hard on Thursday, rest on Friday, and travel to the Kentville on Saturday for a road game against the Valley Wildcats. The Valley squad will be a tough opponent and have traditionally played well against the boys from Dartmouth.

For complete results go to www.nsmmhl.com.

Former Subway and Team Canada Junior Gold Medalist Brad Marchand presents Geoof Hum and the Dartmouth Subways with an official World Junior - Marchand Jersey to display in our team room. Congrats Brad!

Brad Marchand was on hand at Sunday's game for the ceremonial puck drop after receiving a congratulatory address and award from Vice President Graham Owen. Brad and Graham join Alexis Crossley for the singing of our National Anthem. The team offered special rates and promotions for Minor Hockey Players and their Parents throughout the weekend to celebrate 'Hockey Day in Canada'!

SUBS SNEEK OUT THREE POINTS FROM WEEKEND SET WITH MACS
January 14, 2007

The second place Dartmouth Subways eeked out a win in OT Saturday night in an 8-7 shoot-out and a 4-4 tie on Sunday against the stubborn Halifax McDonalds on the weekend. Halifax were very opportunistic around the Dartmouth net even though they were outshot handily in both contests. Dartmouth walked away with three of four points yet were dissatisfied with their overall defensive performance as a team.

Dartmouth has six league games remaining before the first round of playoffs beginning with the McCains at Cole Harbour Place on Wednesday.

SUBWAYS CELEBRATE HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA THIS WEEKEND!

The Dartmouth Subways will celebrate Hockey Day in Canada at the Dartmouth Sportsplex on Saturday and Sunday when the squad hosts the Halifax McDonalds. A Minor Hockey Player and a Parent will be admitted to either game for only $4 and players are encouraged to wear their team jersey. The Subways will also host a few teams and their parents throughout the weekend.

One team in particular, the Cole Harbour Novice Development Team, will join the Subways on Saturday night. The Red Wings players will sit with the Subway players in the teamroom for the pre-game talk and join us on the bench for the National Anthem before moving to the stands to enjoy the game.

Help us celebrate the game of hockey! See you on the weekend.

Game times are Saturday at 7:30pm and Sunday at 1:00pm.

SUBWAYS TROUNCED BY DETROIT IN CROSS-OVERS
January 6, 2007

Detroit Bell Tire scored 8 power-play goals on the way to a 10-1 win over the Dartmouth Subways on Saturday in the cross-overs in Gatineau. Period Scores were 2-0 and 7-0 with the only Subway goal coming on the Power Play with Nick Rose on the bench for another attacker with about 8 minutes remaining in the game. Shane Robar was the goalscorer.

From all accounts, the team played well when five on five but displayed frustration and a lack of discipline that hurt the team on numerous occasions. "Detroit is an older and experienced team. Their intensity and puck movement was excellent but they are not 9 goals better. The fact that they have four 18 yearolds and nine 17 yearolds certainly plays in their favor. But, of the 15 penalties we took atleast six were needless and of the selfish variety and that hurt us. Overall, the experience was what we expected and we know what needs to improve as we enter the playoffs in five weeks time," said Coach Crossley.

The Subways return home on Sunday and will begin preparations for games this coming weekend against Halifax at the Dartmouth Sportsplex.

Hockey Day in Canada is this coming weekend and to celebrate, any Minor Hockey Player with a Jersey and a Parent will be admitted to the game on Saturday or Sunday for only $4.

KIRKLAND LAKE TAKES 6-4 WIN OVER SUBS
January 5, 2007

The Subways finished the round robin portion of the Kiwanis Hockey Tournament with a record of 2 wins and 1 loss after dropping a 6-4 decision to Kirkland Lake. The game was close throughout yet lacked polish in the small confines of the Cholette Arena in Gatineau. Alex Beaton and Steven Anthony both scored two goals apiece, all with the man advantage, and Gerrad Grant was chosen the game star for the Subways.

The team now awaits the results of the other round robin games which end on Friday evening, to see when they might play again on Saturday in the cross-over games. The Subways and Weeks Major Midgets are the only two NS teams remaining along with Atlantic Teams St. John's Maple Leafs, Fredericton Canadians, and Charlottetown Islanders. Early expectations are that the Subways will face the #7 ranked team in the USA, Detroit Bell Tire but this is yet to be confirmed. Detroit tied Dartmouth in their last meeting in New Hampshire in December after the Subways took a 4-0 lead into the final period.

SUBWAYS DEFEAT CHARLOTTETOWN 5-4
January 4, 2007

In a back and forth tight game, the Subways scored short-handed, three on the power play and one goal even strength to gain the 5-4 victory over the PEI squad. The Subways sit at 2-0 and will finish first in the division regardless of Saturday's outcome against Kirkland Lake in the early morning. The Subways will look to finish the round robin off with a win but expect a tough game as Kirkland Lake will be looking to win their first game of the tourney.

Goal Scorers for the Subways were John MacDonald, Steven Anthony, Taylor MacGillivary, Alex Beaton, and Gerrad Grant. Nick Rose got the win in the contest. Steven Anthony was voted as the tournament player of the game.

SUBWAYS 3-2 WINNERS OVER GLOUCESTER
January 4, 2007

The Subways pulled out a 3-2 win with bus legs after a long travel day of 17 hours on Tuesday. Although the win was nice, the squad played a little sloppy at times yet had a enough to score twice in the third period for the come from behnd win in front of Andrew Sidey. Geoff Hum, chosen tournament player of the game, had two goals while Steven Anthony had the winner on a nice spin-a-rama shot inside the circle.

The boys play Charlottetown on Thursday. The PEI Team beat Kirkland Lake 5-2 in their first game. In the last meeting in Moncton against Charlottetown, the Subways ended up on the short end of a 2-0 score so the boys will look to even the score.

Holiday Hockey Notes:

  • Chris Ivanko, John MacDonald, and Mike Roski just returned from playing for Team South in the NSMMHL AllStar Game December 29th. Chris had two goals and an assist to go along with his shoot-out goal in the 8-7 loss. John had a goal and an assist as well. Geoff Hum played with the Weeks Crushers Junior A Team on December 28th and got stormed in and was unable to make it to the AllStar Game as expected because of the poor weather conditions.
  • Seven Subway players spent three days after Christmas with the NS Canada Games Team in New Glasgow in a mini camp to prepare for the Canada Games in late February.
  • The Dartmouth Subway Players, Parents, Staff, Family, and Friends raised $2700 for an important and wonderful family in our community in the 10 Days before Christmas and presented that family with the gift on December 23rd. Outstanding and Up-Lifting! Thank you to all.
  • Alumni Updates: Blake Gallagher is with Cornell University in a tournament in Florida after Christmas; Brad Marchand is in Sweden with the Team Canada Juniors and seven of his family members including brother Jeff who is also a former Sub; James Sheppard scored 4 goals in a Q game the other night and came inches away from getting the 5th one and a Cape Breton team record; Check out the Subway Jersey and numerous other items in the Sidney Crosby Trophy Case at Cole Harbour Place when you get a chance. Sidney was in town for the opening of the display on Dec 23 and was humble and gracious as always.

CROSBY ON DISPLAY AT COLE HARBOUR PLACE
December 26, 2006

Sidney Crosby was home for a brief holiday visit last weekend and was honoured
by a select group of family and friends at Cole Harbour Place on Saturday
evening. About 100 people were invited to the ceremony celebrating Sidney's
accomplishments and quality character.

At the ceremony Sidney was introduced by three of his former minor hockey
teammates Nathan Welton, Mike Chaisson, and Cory Banfield. Guest Speakers were
Councillor Harry McInroy, President of Cole Harbour Minor - Bill Morris, and
Subway Coach Brad Crossley. Subway Hockey Captain Geoff Hum also presented
Sidney with a special Subway 'Yellow' Jersey with Crosby and the #87 on the
back. Steve Coates and Paul Mason were instrumental in making this event happen
from start to finish with the support of Sidney and the Crosby Family.

The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the Crosby Trophy Case which
holds many of his prized jerseys, including his Subway Hockey #9 Jersey, and a
few other special items of interest. The Cabinet is a beautiful work of art
designed, built, and installed by Mike's Country Kitchens and Woodworking. You
can view the cabinet on the upper level at Cole Harbour Place.

FATHER AND SON PICS

Subway Goaltender Nick Rose and his father Keith share a laugh after our Parent-Player Christmas Hockey Game played Thursday night. Nick, who played as a forward into PeeWee Hockey, gave up goaltender duties, as did Andrew Sidey, to Chris Ivanko and Andrew Bonazza.

Here is a picture of the group after the hard fought game which the parents and staff won by a score of 68-66 (not really!). Jason Troini said he had 67 of the 68 goals but he was in the box the whole time after getting rocked and losing his temper when Ryan Mitchell decked him (haha)!

SUBS SAIL PAST MACS AND INTO CHRISTMAS
December 21, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways sail into the Christmas Break on a five game win streak after defeating the Halifax McDonalds 7-1 Wednesday night at the Forum. The Subways scored two unanswered goals in the first period and another three in the second frame and led 6-0 in the third until Alex Porter jumped on a Subway turnover for a breakaway and scored on Nick Rose with just under seven minutes remaining. Dartmouth held a territorial advantage throughout the game and displayed an exceptional battle level in the corners and in front of the net. Halifax statisticians had the shots on goal at 73-34 in favor of the Subways who played without veteran players Chris Ivanko and Christian Morin. Scoring for the Subways were Geoff Hum two, and Alex Beaton, Steven Anthony, John MacDonald, Collin Gates, and Taylor MacGillivary. Nick Rose was solid in net for the Subways while Cameron Murphy was very busy in the Halifax net.

DARTMOUTH PREPARE FOR FINAL GAME BEFORE BREAK
December 20, 2006

The Subways defeated the South Shore Mustangs last evening in Bridgewater by a score of 5-2. The game was an end to end fast contest which saw excellent scoring chances at both ends and some hard body checks as well. After two periods the game was tied 2-2 with the Subways playing strong on special teams in the third to score three unanswered goals and shut the door on defense.

The squad plays the Halifax McDonalds tonight at the Forum Complex in what is sure to be a very entertaining and emotional game. This is the final game for both teams going into the Holiday Season.

A reminder that our Christmas Skate with the Subways is on Saturday at the Sportsplex at 10:00am. Family, friends, and sponsors are welcome and encouraged to attend.

SUBS DOWN CATS IN WEEKEND SET
December 17, 2006

Saturday: Subways 3 vs. Wildcats 2
The Subways conjured up a win in front of outstanding goaltending from Andrew Sidey which allowed the squad to sneak out a win in the contest. Valley played
tenacious and jumped on numerous Subway miscues and even had five breakaways yet were unable to close out the win. Ryan Mitchell scored the winner in the third period after the teams traded 2 goals apiece in the first frame.

Sunday: Subways 4 vs Wildcats 2
The Valley went ahead 2-0 by the midway point of the game and the Subways responded with four straight goals to earn the win. Goaltender Nick Rose had a
terrific game particularly in the third period when he made numerous key saves through traffic.

The Subways now change their focus to the South Shore and Halifax whom they face on Tuesday and Wednesday on the road.

SUBWAYS HUNT FOR 8 POINTS HEADING INTO HOLIDAY SEASON
December 14, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways will be looking to take one game at a time in seeking 4 wins and 8 points with four games left before the Christmas Break. The Subways play the Valley this coming weekend before taking on the South Shore next Tuesday and Halifax on Wednesday.

"Honestly, we will be disappointed if we do not win all four games based on our ability and the level of our game experienced in New Hampshire. We are not taking anything away from our competitors and know that they are capable and will be gunning for us. If we play harder and together we can do what we set
out to do and I have confidence in our players when they come focused, prepared, and hungry! We expect our players to be accountable for their effort, consistency, and contribution and are looking forward to the challenge over the coming week," said Coach Crossley.

AUCTION A BIG SUCCESS
December 9, 2006

The Dartmouth Subway Players, Parents and Staff would like to say thank you to all who helped make this year's major fund-raiser a tremendous success. About 150 people showed up at Brewsters in Bedford on a wintery Friday night to support the club at our Auction and Social. Thank you as well to our many friends and business partners who contributed items and supported this endeavor.

The Subways host the South Shore Mustangs this weekend (Dec 9/10) and head to the Valley next weekend. On December 23rd the Annual Christmas Skate with the Subways will take place at the Dartmouth Sportsplex at 10:00am. We invite all family, friends, and supporters to attend this fun gathering to celebrate the season and skate with us.

SUBWAYS LOSE TWO ON SATURDAY
December 2, 2006

Speed, Intensity, and Execution is the key to success and something the Subways
have preached for years and it is what hurt us today! The Chicago Young
Americans defeated the Subs 5-2 in the morning tilt and the LA Kings dominated
7-1 on the strength of six power play goals in the evening. The two losses
eliminated the Subways from contention for the championship round. The team
will now face either Pittsburgh or Boston in the final game of the tournament
on Sunday morning.

Nick Rose and Andrew Sidey played in both games today. Goal scorers were Alex
Beaton with two in the morning and Steven Anthony with one in the 7-1 loss.

"Chicago was beatable but we just didn't get the job done. The LA Kings were
much better than us and moved the puck efficiently and fast. I thought we
embarrassed ourselves with our lack of composure in the final frame. These
teams play at a higher level than we are accustomed to and we didn't react very
well this evening against LA. I am extremely disappointed in our response this
evening."

Of interest:
Dallas Stars have a $600,000 budget, travel to tournaments almost every weekend
all across North America, practice every day, and recruit from across the USA.

Detroit players pay $15000 each to play on their team and they travel
extensively.

Most teams in the event have between 7 and 12 eighteen year-old players on their
squad.

Shattuck, Dallas, Detroit, and Illinois are rated in the top five Major Midget
teams in the USA. Chicago Chill, LA Kings, and Anaheim are 7th, 9th and 10th
in the USA.

There are dozens of USA Prep, Junior, and College scouts here and there are also
many NHL scouts watching closely over many of the 18 year-olds on the various
USA Midget clubs.

The Subways are the youngest club in the event by a large margin.

SUBS LOSE 4-0 LEAD LATE IN FINAL FRAME
December 1, 2006

After pulling ahead 4-0 against Detroit Bell Tire, The Dartmouth Subways
experienced a meltdown of sorts based on a lack of discipline, a little
selfishness, and poor composure.

The Subways were well in control until finding the penalty box with 17 minutes
remaining and played much of the remainder of the game short handed from that
point onward allowing Detroit a chance.

Although disappointed with the tie based on giving away the win, the team had
it's best outing of the season throught the first half of the game on the
Olympic Ice at UNH arena.

The Subways play the defending champs, the Chicago Young Americans on Saturday
morning in a must win game.

SUBWAYS PLAY SOLID IN 4-0 VICTORY
November 26, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways hosted the Cole Harbour McCain on Saturday night and
skated away with an excellent 60 minute effort and a 4-0 win over our
cross-town rivals. Nick Rose was solid and was rewarded with the shutout and
was the games first star. Goal scorers for the Subways were Geoff Hum, Alex
Beaton, Matt Sollows, and Gerrad Grant. Special teams were the difference in
the game for the Subways as the penalty kill was sharp and the power play
showed it's effectiveness in producing three goals.

The Subways will now prepare for a mid week trip to New Hampshire for further
experience and exposure for our players and hockey program. Follow the daily
updates and results on our site beginning Thursday.

SUBWAY HOCKEY AUCTION: Friday December 8th at Brewsters in Bedford at 7:00pm

DARTMOUTH WINS CLOSE ONE OVER COLE HARBOUR
November 23, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways defeated the Cole Harbour McCain by a score of 2-1 in a tightly contested game played at Cole Harbour Place on Wednesday night. There was no scoring in the first period but the Subways scored two unanswered goals in the second to open a little breathing room. Geoff Hum hit the scoresheet on a nice individual effort while Andrew Roski scored on a breakaway shortly afterward. However, early into the third period Randy Gilbert scored for the McCains off a slapper from the blue line to get them with one of tying the game and make the game very exciting for the fans.

The penalty situation was very one-sided as Cole Harbour had 12 minutes in penalties and Dartmouth 32 minutes. Each team had quality chances to score on the Power Play but both goaltenders, Andrew Sidey for Dartmouth and Philip Wright for Cole Harbour, came up with big saves.

The two teams meet again on Saturday at the Dartmouth Spoirtsplex at 7:30pm in what is sure to be another entertaining contest.

Our Captain's Reflection on the Season to Date
November 20, 2006

This is an article from Geoff Hum. Geoff is in his third and final season with our club and is our team captain and a consistent and hard working performer. He will play Junior Hockey next season with plans to attend USA College for academics and athletics.

Hi everyone! After losing in the quarter finals of the Monctonian I thought I would reflect on the season so far. It has been filled with ups and downs, as expected for a young team like ours. It seems like in all my three years of playing here that we have had the same problem. We struggle with team cohesion on and off the ice through the early part of the season. In the past years we have come together in the last half of the year and it is the main reason we have been successful. I thought Moncton was a great trip to just hang out with some of our teammates. We also played some pretty good hockey with really only one bad game.

The biggest low of the season so far was that we just came off a three game losing streak and I can’t think of another time the Subways have had that. However it is better to go through a losing streak like that in November than it is for that to happen in the first round of the playoffs.

Like me in my first year, it takes some time for the young guys to get used to the league. If you were on a good team in bantam, you could sometimes just show up to the rink, not a give a good effort and come out with a win. Midget is different. Everyone wants to beat the Dartmouth Subways and every team will bring their best effort against us. If we don’t match their effort we will struggle like we did when we lost to the Tradesman - they simply outworked us.

Our coaching staff has been coaching and winning for a lot of years and they certainly know what it takes. For us to be successful it takes 20 guys to buy into the system and know that they have been there before and they know what is best for the TEAM

On a personal level, I have found it very frustrating so far with the amount of time spent in games on special teams. We seem to be spending far too many minutes killing penalties or on the PP that the games lack flow but I am sure it will get better. After our experience at the Monctonian, the officiating was very good and it was nice to be able to hit a person without an interference penalty being called. As a team we have begun to adjust to the 'new game' and we hope that the new and open game will benefit our level of skill.

Overall, it has been a pretty good start to the season but we certainly have many things to work on such as special teams and D-Zone coverage however the key to all these things is working hard. If we do that, it will all come sooner or later. We have a great group and get along very well. It will be fun to see how much we progress and to see how hard we can push ourselves

Looking ahead, we have a couple big weeks coming up. We play our rivals the McCain’s and then we are off a big tournament in New Hampshire where we play some of the best teams in the USA.

Until next time, Go SUBS Go!

SUBWAYS GET SHUT OUT IN QUARTER-FINAL
November 18, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways lost out to Charlottetown by a score of 2-0 in the Monctonian quarter-finals on Saturday. The Subways played games on Saturday at 9:00am, 4:30pm, and 8:30pm which is a lot of hockey, played at a high level, in a short time.

In the first game the Subs lost 4-0 to Saint John in an un-inspired morning contest, the boys defeated Tri-Pen, Nfld 4-0 in the wildcard game, and ran out of steam and finish against the PEI crew in the night game.

If there were positives gained from the weekend, they are:
1) we know we are in a position to compete with all other teams in our region and will be better when it counts.
2) our boys should know what it takes to 'buy in' be 'on the same page', while understanding 'accountability'.
3) we know the importance of HARD WORK and CONSISTENCY!
4) 'WE' are always more important than 'I' and 'I' will look much better when 'WE' experience success!

The Subways take on Cole Harbour this coming week on Wednesday at Cole Harbour Place and on Saturday at the Dartmouth Sportsplex. See you there!

SUBWAYS SINK VALLEY TO GO 2-0 AT MONCTONIAN
November 17, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways defeated the Valley Wildcats 8-2 on the strength of 6 power play goals and a solid team effort. Chris Ivanko scored two goals and added two assist to lead the way for the Subways while Steven Anthony had a goal and two assists. Andrew Roski, Alex Beaton, Gerrad Grant, John MacDonald, and Matt Sollows also hit the scoresheet. Andrew Sidey got the win and affiliate goaltender Cameron Poirier saw his first Major Midget action and played the last 11 minutes of the contest. Shots on goal were 40-16 in favor of Dartmouth.

Presently seven teams sit at 2-0 in the tourney including two of our NS teams, the Weeks Major Midgets and the Cole Harbour McCain. The Subways take on Saint John, NB on Saturday morning at 9:00am in their final round robin game. Saint John are 2-0 as well, defeating Valley 4-2 and Central Newfoundland 5-0.

SUBWAYS START STRONG IN MONCTON
November 16, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways opened up with a win at the Monctonian Tournament today. The Subways defeated Central Newfondland by a score of 6-2. Goal scorers for Dartmouth were Geoff Hum (2), Matt Sollows, Chris Ivanko, Steven Anthony, and Shane Robar. Andrew Sidey got the win in goal and will play again on Friday as veteran goaltender Nick Rose will sit out on the weekend due to illness.

Part 3: Experiences After Subway Hockey
USA Prep School and Matt Snow

November 7, 2006

Matt Snow played the last two seasons with the Subways and is now in his first year of studies and athletics at Deerfield Academy in Massechusetts. He aspires to get a scholarship for academics and athletics to US College. Matt attended JL Ilsley High last year and is a product of Chebucto Minor Hockey.

Hello!

Life at Deerfield is going great. Since the beginning of the school year, we have been on the ice 3 times a week. These “Captain’s Practices” were not so intense, but gave most of the players an opportunity to get on the ice, and prepare for the upcoming season. This is an advantage for our squad since many hockey teams won’t get a chance to hit the ice until preseason (the end of November). It seems like somewhat of a disappointment not to have started hockey yet, but the season is approaching soon. The ice at the Deerfield hockey rink will go in next weekend. Hockey is one of the school’s primary sports, and so it acquires the entire campus’s attention. Most of the campus, and student body is in attendance at all the games, and from what I’ve heard, our hockey fans are ‘intense. Once the season starts we will be on the ice six days a week, 4-5 practices and 1-2 games.

Next Weekend is Choate Day weekend, a weekend when Deerfield students will travel to Choate to cheer on our athletes who will play Choate in every fall term sport on this prestigious weekend. Choate is our central rival. Interscholastic sports are competitive and intense.

The year is divided into three terms; fall, winter, and spring. Each student is required to play a sport or participate in some extra curricular activity for each term. Most of the hockey guys, including myself, have been playing tennis for the fall term, and working out. The facilities are great, but the food is better…all you can eat. Improvements are being made to our gym and the grand opening of our 53 million dollar science building will be next week.

Academically, the expectations are higher than those at public school, however it is not as challenging as you might expect. Classes have only ten to fourteen students, and usually consist of open discussions. Much of the learning is done on your own outside of the classroom, to prepare you for college. Above all, the secret to succeeding is being able to effectively manage your time. Finding the balance between all those expectations is what you have to able to do, something that you begin learning as a subway hockey player.

Our hockey team has high expectations this year. We have a number returning seniors, and many new recruits. Last year the team managed a fair five hundred record, but this year we are expected to contend for a New England championship. So until then, “let’s go subs!”

November 5, 2006

CB West captured four points this weekend doing all of their scoring on the power play with 8 goals and winning by scores of 3-2 and 5-3 over the Dartmouth Subways. The Subways managed to score first in both games yet struggled to penetrate the Islanders defense and put pucks at the back of the net. Go to www.nsmmhl.com for box scores and updates.

SUBWAY HOCKEY TIDBITS
November 2, 2006

After Wednesday nights win over Halifax, the Subways presently hold a record of 11 wins 3 losses, 0 ties, and 1 OT Loss for 23 points and a tie with Weeks Major Midgets for first place in the NSMMHL.

The Subways hit the road and will be in Cape Breton the next two weekends, then in Moncton, and spend a weekend at home before heading to New Hampshire for the Beantown Fall Classic and will visit U of Maine, U of New Hampshire, and take in a game between Boston University and Boston College.

The Official Subway Hockey Guide will be available to the public at our next home game which is November 25 against the McCains.

Here are the average ages of the NSMMHL Teams this season:
Pictou 16.05; CBWest 16.00; Cole Harbour 15.90; South Shore 15.85; Cape Breton 15.80; Valley 15.79; Dartmouth 15.75; Halifax 15.70

Numerous Major Junior, Junior A, and College Teams have started contacting us about players and have been at our practices and games. Recently, Clem Jodoin of the Lewiston Maniacs/Team Canada visited our practice and US Colleges such as Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Cornell, and MercyHurst along with numerous Prep Schools have been watching closely.

We have received emails from Subway fans across Canada, in Western Europe, and on the west coast of the USA who follow our team and the NSMMHL through our site. We have also had numerous inquiries from people wanting to buy Subway Hockey jerseys which is kid of neat too.

The Dartmouth Subway Team Auction and Social is on December 8th at Brewsters in Bedford. Tickets will be available from all members of the Subways this coming week. See you there!

SEVEN SUBWAYS MAKE N.S. CANADA GAMES HOCKEY TEAM
October 31, 2006

To say that we are pleased and proud is an understatement!

No less than seven present Subway players have earned a spot on the 2007 Nova Scotia Canada Games Men's Hockey Team that will compete in Whitehorse in February. Our entire group would like to congratulate Christian Morin (defense), Scott McDonald (defense), Shane Robar (defense), Matt Sollows (defense), Alex Beaton (forward), Gerrad Grant (forward), and Steven Anthony (forward) for their accomplishment. Former Subway Michael Kirkpatrick (Weeks Crushers Junior A) has also been selected and we are very pleased for and proud of him as well. The eighth Subway on the squad is our Trainer Mike MacDonald. Mike has been selected as the Director of Operations and Equipment Manager for the team and will definitely wear the NS colours with honour.

The Dartmouth Subways would like to congratulate all players and staff members for their selection to the NS Canada Games Team. We will support all of you in this combined effort as you represent our province and your communities at this national event. Best Wishes for a wonderful experience and much success!

SUBS RESURFACE
October 29, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways played below expectations this past weekend but were still able get two points, coming close to four, against the Weeks Major Midgets. In what the Subways approached as just another weekend of preparation for the post-season, the Weeks had other plans based on comments in a Pictou County Newspaper 'The News' this past week that it was "going to be the biggest weekend of the year."

The Weeks were prepared and played hard led by their power play (which scored five times on the weekend). The Subways actually led 3-1 halfway through game one on Saturday night but allowed the Weeks to score three unanswered goals, the winner with under three minutes remaining, to steal the win. In game two on Sunday, the Weeks skated to a 4-2 lead with less than seven minutes remaining and looked to be confident and in control. The Subways, never a team to give up, scored two goals to tie it, killed off a penalty into overtime, and got the winner off a Chris Ivanko snap shot at the top of the circles for the win.

Assistant Coach Jason Troini mentioned: "The Weeks have a good team and we enjoy playing them because it is always a good battle. This was just another weekend of Major Midget Hockey for us and part of a long tough journey. We were not overjoyed with our own team-play as it seemed disjointed at times and lacked discipline but in the end we showed Subway character to finish off the weekend with a win on Sunday and that is something to build on."

The Subways practice on Monday and Tuesday before facing the Halifax McDonalds for the first time this season on Wednesday at the Forum. Game time is 7:30pm

For complete weekend stats go to www.nsmmhl.com.

SUBS ONE POINT BACK OF WEEKS
October 23, 2006

With 6-0 and 5-2 wins over the Valley Wildcats this past weekend, the Dartmouth Subways now change their focus to competing against arch rival Pictou County Weeks this coming weekend in New Glasgow. The Weeks hold down top spot with a 10 win 2 loss record and a slim one point lead over the Subways which makes the coming weekend much more interesting. The Weeks and the Subways last met on opening weekend with the Weeks winning game one 3-2 and the Subways winning game two by an 8-4 margin. Both teams match up very well against each other in all aspects and there is a good rivalry between the two clubs.

Part 2: Experiences After Subway Hockey
Life at US College and D-1 Hockey with Blake Gallagher

Sent October 12, 2006

Hello everyone! All here is going very well. We had our last Captain’s Practice today and tomorrow is our Red and White game. To give you an idea of how big the hockey is here, they are expecting 2500+ people for the game. The preseason training here was extremely tough. We were in the gym about four days a week and two of those days we were on the track or the field for conditioning as well and once a week we were on the skating treadmill. On top of that we are on the ice six days a week (Sundays off).

We certainly have our work cut out for us this year, having eight freshman and eight sophomores but we feel pretty comfortable with our group of guys. Our game schedule is actually pretty similar to midget hockey, we play every Friday and Saturday and have Sundays off. Practice is where guys earn their ice time, so the practices get extremely intense. The college game is fast and very physical, very disciplined as far as penalties go as well as how committed the teams are to defense. There are also limited scoring chances so special teams will play a huge role in some teams success.

Our fitness testing was also pretty demanding. It consisted of Bench Press (225lbs max reps), 15 yard shuttle, Dips, Squats, Vertical jump, Shoelkopf Shuttle (50 yards X 4) 1:15 rest 9 times with each one having to be under 36 seconds, and Body composition. Now that the preseason is over we are all pretty excited to start playing. Our opening weekend will be the 27th and 28th of this month.

Classes are very large for freshman, I have two classes with about 450 students and one with 1325 students (biggest in the world). The other classes I have are pretty small (between 20-40 students). The atmosphere is much different than high school, we spend a lot more time doing work away from the class than in the class, since each class is only two or three times a week. Life away from the rink is a blast, I have been told by many that university is the best four years of your life and so far that is 100% true. Hope to see you in Providence vs. Brown when you come to New Hampshire for the Beantown Classic. Until then, Go Subways!

(Blake is only 18 years old and captained the Subways in 2004-05 before going to Saskatchewan to play a year of Junior A for the Notre Dame Hounds. He is in his first season at Cornell which is an Ivy League School. He played all of his minor hockey in Cole Harbour before two exceptional years with the Dartmouth Subways.)

A Note From The Coach:

I just want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who support us at the rink and read about our team through our website. As you know, our mission is to assist in the development of hockey players and outstanding community members and pursue excellence along the way. We are 10 Games into the NSMMHL season and sit in the upper half of the league with a 7-3 record and it is a good moment in time to make a couple of comments about our progress thus far:

TEAM: Our team is coming together and we are very pleased with the group that we have. The players are getting along great and are working hard yet need to work much harder to get where we expect to be. Our skill and character is excellent and our chemistry is developing and will get better as we hit the road for a few overnighters in the coming weeks. Our parent group is positive, supportive, and are developing the closeness required to help with our team success as well. This weekend our parents will host a Tailgate Party at the Sportsplex prior to Saturday's game which includes a Potluck variety of foods. This is their second gathering in this young season and things are coming together nicely.

LEAGUE: The league and member teams are also very talented and hard-working. As we have already noticed there are very few occasions where teams are walking away with games without a major challenge. Overall the league is very young as compared to other years. Halifax has the youngest team with an average age of 15.5 while the Subways are next with 15.65 only slightly younger than last years squad (15.85) that won the Provincial Title.

OFFICIATING: Our squad has found the penalty box far too often during the first 10 games and we have to become much more disciplined. Although it has been a major adjustment for all thus far as we adapt to the 'new rules' and expected standard of play, it is my expectation that the new way will benefit our skill level and team play as we advance through the season and all parties get more accustomed to the standards, speed, and abilities in the game. Go to www.hockeynovascotia.ca for the Hockey Canada Press Release on "It's a New Game".

SPONSORS: Our sponsorship initiatives have been very successful thus far. Our Official Team Program Guide is going to be bigger and better than ever and we want to thank our corporate business partners and friends of Subway Hockey for your support. Also a big thank you to our long-time Partner 'SUBWAY' and to MCK and First Choice Haircutters for their major commitment to our club.

OUR FACILITY: We have the best arena and fitness facility in the league and quite possibly in Eastern Canada and are quite proud of it. The Dartmouth Sportsplex is a great place to watch our players and the teams in the NSMMHL. Although the Sportsplex is a big spot we do appreciate those that attend and certainly look forward to playoffs when the attendance triples. The staff at the Sportsplex are great to our boys and appreciate our team and we extend our thanks.

EXPECTATIONS: There are never any guarantees in the NSMMHL. All that we can tell you is that our team will be a harder working and more talented group in February, March, and April than we are now and we expect to be tough to beat! There are many things to build on and improve between now and then but we know it won't be easy but we will make it very exciting and we encourage you to experience it!

See you at the rink.

SUBWAYS SURRENDER POINTS TO SOUTH SHORE
October 15, 2006

The Subways got three points for the standings in winning and losing by identical 4-3 overtime scores against the South Shore Mustangs on the weekend.
Although some might consider getting the points a positive, we walked away disappointed in our performance after losing in Chester on Sunday even though we lead 2-0 into the second frame.

The South Shore has a small, good skating and hardworking hockey club that is much improved. The Subways pummelled the Shore with 56 shots on Saturday in Bridgewater and squeaked out the win in OT. This was a penalty filled contest with only 12 minutes of 5 vs 5 play in the sixty minute game and only 37 seconds of the first at even strength. All seven goals were on the power-play.

Sunday's game was well officiated with very few penalties to both teams and a lot of flow to the game. The shots were fairly even yet the South Shore out hustled the Subways on numerous occasions and won some key battles to create scoring chances and get the win. The Mustangs deserved the win to match their effort.

Coach Crossley was notably unhappy: "We have a few too many passengers right now that paid the fare and just seem happy to be riding the bus. We need drivers not passengers and will do a few extra things with some individuals to bring them closer to the front seat. This week the boys will have a first hand opportunity to lead and follow. We are going to approach the coming weekend against the Valley as a playoff series and prepare in practice the same way to give the guys a sense of present day reality. The heat just got turned up and we'll see who wants to stand out and who wants to blend in!"

Go to www.nsmmhl.com for weekend results, stats, and standings.

Part 1: Experiences After Subway Hockey
Alexi Pianosi and Life in Moncton and the QMJHL

October 8, 2006

Although it has only been ten games so far, I'm really enjoying the QMJHL. I'm being challenged like I never have before. The pace, the time to make
decisions, the physical demand on your body and adapting to the lifestyle have all been a challenge but good challenges. The speed is definitely
quicker and it takes a while to get used to it. There is much less time to make decisions which means you have to think quick and always put yourself
in a good position by moving your feet. The physical demand on your body is far more difficult then in midget. In a span of two weeks you may only have
one day off, which doesn't leave much time to rest and relax. Especially when everyday you're either practicing, playing or travelling on a bus. It means
you must be very diligent with your nutrition, hydration, and rest, because as I quickly learned, it will hurt you if you don't.

The most enjoyable part is adapting to the lifestyle, which is close to a professional lifestyle. With frequent road trips and practices. Extra ice sessions, workouts, video sessions and team meetings, much more time is devoted to hockey. You can workout or watch game film whenever you please, and I've come to realize that If you don't you'll fall behind.

I'm also enjoying my time away from the rink. I go to school three periods in the morning where I'm taking Biology, English and an online World Issues Course. Next Semester I'll have math and chemistry. The schoolwork is just as challenging as in Nova Scotia, but when you miss four of 5 days a week sometimes, it's essential to get your work and keep on top of it. Which can be hard on a long bus trip.

In my case I'm very fortunate because I was given excellent billets who provide me with everything I need and are very supportive. They're like a
second family to me and it's a very comfortable way to live.

A typical day would be as follows:
8:30 - 12:10 school
1:15 at rink
2:15 on ice
3:45 practice over
4:30 off ice
4:45 video/gym
6:30 Home
6:30 -11:00 changes depending on day and amount of homework

That's the QMJHL in a nutshell, Hope to see you all around the rink. Go
Cats Go!

SUBWAYS ON THANKSGIVING BREAK
October 4, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways are on a break from NSMMHL action and will not play again until visiting the South Shore on October 14th. Meanwhile, the team will have a number of practices and off ice sessions to stay sharp. Eight players will be taking part in the Atlantic Challenge Cup while playing for the NS Under 17 team that will make up the provincial representative that will compete in the Canada Games in February. Subway Trainer Mike MacDonald is on the NS staff as well. Go Nova Scotia!

On some other notes:
- Blake Gallagher is about to start his season with Cornell in the NCAA. He sent an email and continues to follow our teams progress wishing all here back home the very best.
- I spoke with the Crosby's at the rink yesterday as they were supporting their daughter Taylor who was at skating lessons. They were very excited about heading down to catch Pittsburgh's home opener and games against Philly and Detroit. Go get 'em Sid!
- Danny MacKinnon is the captain of the Weeks Crushers. He sent an email on the past weekend noting our 'Team First' theme of last week and he wishes all the boys and the program much success. The Crushers have been in existence for three years and their three captains have all been former Subways (Jeff Kielbratowski, Stewart Paterson, and Danny). Danny noted that former Sub Michael Kirkpatrick is doing very well with the team and we should be proud of him (we certainly are!).
- Subway Captain Geoff Hum will be taking part in the MJAHL Showcase in Moncton this weekend. He is an affiliate with the Weeks Crushers and has been asked to play in their games.

Best wishes to all our family and friends. Thank you for your generosity, care, and support. Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!

GOLF TOURNAMENT RESCHEDULED
April 26, 2006

The Dartmouth Subways have decided to postpone and reschedule the Subway Hockey-Jeff Smith Golf Tournament. Originally scheduled for May 26, our Golf Tournament will now take place on August 17 and will still be held at River Oaks Golf and Country Club.

The change in date allows us more time to focus on making the event even bigger and better. "Hopefully with the change it will be warmer and dry this time around and we should have another great turn-out of celebrity golfers and supporting teams in the heat of the summer. This new date also allows us to avoid Memorial Cup weekend in Moncton as a number of golfers notified us that there was a conflict," said Brad Crossley.

Coach Crossley is presently putting together a committee to coordinate and grow the event. Committee members will look after gathering teams, placing celebrity golfers, acquiring support from the business community, and looking after prizes, meals, etc. Stay tuned for updated registration forms and new items of interest in the coming weeks. Thank you for your continued support.
